Route Description
Introduction
Timbavati Game Reserve is conveniently located 1 hour by road from Hoedspruit. This allows safari guests to either fly into Hoedspruit or self-drive from Johannesburg. Driving times from Johannesburg to Gomo Gomo Lodge is about 6 hours.
When to go
The best time to visit the Timbavati Game Reserve is during the dry winter months, from May to October.
Detailed description
The recommended route from Johannesburg to Timbavati is through Belfast, Lydenburg, Ohrigstad and Hoedspruit.
Alternatively, a slightly longer scenic route is to branch off this route about 20km after Lydenburg, onto the R533. This forms part of the scenic and popular Panorama route and takes you past Pilgrim's Rest, Blyde River Canyon and Three Rondovals. The Panorama route can also go to Hoedspruit, where you would again pick up the Gomo Gomo Route into the Timbavati.
This route can be comfortably done in half a day, but to arrive at the lodge at a reasonable check-in time, you would need to leave early in the morning. If you do select to go along the Panorama Route, we would highly recommend that you spend at least 1 night enjoying some of the spectacular sights en route.
